McPhy Test Lab for Low-Carbon Hydrogen Electrolyzers

McPhy Energy is developing electrolyzers that generate sustainable hydrogen from water and power. Founded in 2008, the French company has grown into a leading European player in the hydrogen industry. The team responsible for testing McPhy's high-capacity Megawatt-electrolyzers approached us to expand their space in Wildau near Berlin. We set out to create an ambitious lab, makerspace and office vision, which they can grow into over time - and here it comes!

In a beautiful former locomotive shed in Wildau, south of Berlin, and in close proximity to McPhy's German Headquarter at the Campus of TU Wildau, we were looking into possible sites for placing the testing facility. After a thorough investigation into the lab's requirements, workflows, risk assessment and the dangerous goods being handled, we began developing a big vision of how this lab can incrementally be developed over time.

Design

In the location that was ultimately decided on, we created an office and makerspace concept that serves all of McPhy's testing needs in a safe and engaging work environment. As no technical infrastructure was present, we planned new flooring, ventilation, sanitary installations, gas supply and warning systems. Together with the lab furniture experts from Waldner, we defined and ordered the fume hoods and a sink setup for the lab.

Build

We designed a flexible makerspace equipped with modular workbenches, machinery, and adaptable storage for rapid prototyping and production. The modular furniture doubles as room dividers, making the space efficient and reconfigurable.

Makerspace

The makerspace corner is equipped with workbenches, machinery and flexible storage for quick prototyping and also production. We planned movable and modular furniture that also serves as room dividers.

OFFICE & LOUNGE

The front area of the space is multifunctional - we planned it to have workspaces and a little lounge area. This would be ideal for both the scientists working in the space and visitors who are getting introduced to McPhy and their technology. We aimed for a very versatile design and an optimal use of this compact space. In furnishing, we planned with modular furniture that can host the different functionalities and may always be modified. We made space for lab coats, kanban boards, storage, display and seating - all integrated into a uniform look.
